15 maggio 2005
By

General hardware specs of Dell Inspiron 510m:

  • Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.50GHz – works
  • 15″ SXGA+ LCD screen – works
  • Intel 855 GM video card – buggy! – to setup X you have to disable then re-enable full screen video in BIOS (ver. A09), use the i810 driver, install 855resolution
  • Del wireless 1350 802.11b/g mini PCI – untested yet
  • ALPS touchpad – works

This laptop is operating under Kernel version 2.6
Basic Installation of Debian Linux testing:

  • Why to use Debian: very reliable with excellent package management
  • Obtaining Debian: installer rc03 or in a few days here
  • Installing via installer CD rc03 and the network
  • Post-Install modifications/tweaks: the usual hardening of services

Setting up additional features for Debian Linux

  • Getting Suspend-to-Disk to operate correctly: not yet
  • Alps touchpad: install xfree86-driver-synaptics , no kernel patch needed with a recent 2.6 kernel
  • power down, keyboard and more with i8kutils

Unresolved issues

  • sound

Nice review, if you are still expiering problems with sound, you should try the ubuntu live-cd to check wich 2.6 kernel option you should enable.

I used yesterday the ubuntu live-cd and everything worked!

    cheerz,
