I upgraded from Apple Mac OSX Panther (10.3) to Tiger (10.4) using the Upgrade option of the install dvd. Everything was fine except the AddressBook apparently lost all my contacts. Here’s what I did to solve the problem:

• closed AddressBook.app
• opened a Finder window or Terminal
• went to /Users/yourname/Library/ Application\ Support/AddressBook
• made a copy of AddressBook.data named AddressBook.data.bak (for safety)
• renamed AddressBook.data.beforesave to AddressBook.data
• started AddressBook.app and checked everything is there: yes!

A possible explanation is that I used AddressBook with vCard 2.1 (the default is now 3.0), so the upgrade overlooked my existing addresses, luckily without deleting them.
